A cup of coffee will give you a quick boost of energy, but it’s borrowed energy. That perk you get from the caffeine comes in the form of as ‘loan’ as the caffeine staves temporarily blocks adenosine, a by-product from cells using energy, from binding to its receptors.
The half-life of caffeine is about 5 hours, and after the caffeine breaks down, then you have to ‘repay’ the energy and you’ll feel a bit drowsy or sleepy.
“The debt you owe the caffeine always eventually needs to be repaid, and the only real way to repay it is to sleep.” writes molecular nutritionist Emma Beckett.
